The Evening Telegraph reports on the court appearance of a man who shouted racist abuse at a shopkeeper after he was asked to leave a newsagents shop because of his inebriated state.

Jon Hunter, 42, admitted behaving in a racially aggravated threatening or abusive manner and uttering threats of violence against Muhammed Chaudhary on 3 November 2015 at Dundee Sheriff Court last week.

The court heard Hunter had been a regular customer at his local shop, A&R Newsagents, in King Street, Broughty Ferry, when the incident happened in 2015.

Hunter entered the shop in the late afternoon on that date and was asked to leave by the owner, Muhammed Chaudhary, because of his level of intoxication.

Hunter refused to leave the shop and demanded to be shown all the tobacco that was on sale in the shop telling the complainant that he was duty bound to serve him.

Fiscal depute Sue Ruta, told the court Hunter then started making threats at Mr Chaudhary saying he could “force him to shut up shop and hack his computer”.

Ms Ruta described how Hunter told Mr Chaudhary that he knew where he lived and made threats against him and his family.

Hunter shouted racist remarks at Mr Chaudhary before telling him: “I have your phone number. Start counting down the days until your shop’s shut,” Ms Ruta told the court.

Mr Chaudhary reported the incident to the police the next day and Hunter handed himself in to police on January 3, 2016 telling officers his actions were “out of character”.

Hunter’s solicitor Ross Donnelly told the court his client was “extremely embarrassed and apologetic about his behaviour.

“He has written a letter of apology and apologised in person to the shop owner and that has been accepted,” he said.

Sheriff Lorna Drummond told Hunter his being drunk was “not an excuse” and ordered him to pay compensation to his victim.

Hunter was ordered to pay £300 compensation at the rate of £10 per month.
