Having read Nabeel Qureshi’s piece (here), made me have to respond to the claims he made. He claims that he left Islam due to his Imam(s) not having answers to the questions he had about violent verses in the Quran, Hadith and Sirah literature.
This article, is just a simple response to the quotes he deliberately misquoted. Note, in order to know full answers, readers have to go the links I have provided.
“Muhammad says , “I will expel all the Jews and Christians from the Arabian peninsula and not leave any but Muslim.”
The expulsion of Jews and Christians in Hijaz was due to their hostilities and breaking of treaties:
“In another, he says, “I have been ordered to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger… then they save their lives and property from me.”
If Nabeel took his time out, he would know that this Hadith referred to combatants, who actually harmed Muslims, 1400 years ago. 13th Century scholar, Shaykh Ahmed Ibn Taymiyyah states the following on the above report:
“It refers to fighting those who are waging war, whom Allah has permitted us to fight. It does not refer to those who have a covenant with us with whom Allah commands us to fulfill our covenant.” (Majmu` al-Fatawa vol. 19 p. 20)
“These authentic hadiths are illuminating when trying to understand the Quran’s commands to kill polytheists (9.5)”
Nabeel as usual gives snippet quotes, leaving its textual context out. Why didn’t he quote 9:13 that it was the polytheists who started the hostilities, by attacking and killing Muslims first. Here is what 9:13 says:
“N J Dawood Will you not fight against those who have broken their oaths and conspired to banish the Apostle? They were the first to attack you. Do you fear them? Surely God is more deserving of your fear, if you are true believers.” – Quran 9:13
Factors of breakers of the treaty ”Will you not fight people who
A) broke their oaths
B) determined to expel the Messenger
C) attacked you first
Do you fear them? But God has more right that you should fear him, if you are believers Surah 9:13

“and fight Jews and Christians (9.29-30). Muhammad was fighting people for their beliefs,”
This is a very misleading statement. Muhammed fought the Byzantine (Romans) as a result of them preparing to attack the Muslim community, it had nothing to do with their beliefs.
“on one occasion asking Allah to fill peoples’ homes with flames simply because they delayed the Muslims in their daily prayers.”
Again, what Mr. Nabeel deliberately leaves out is that the Quraysh with many other tribes in Arabia attacked Madinah, and were killing Muslims. So the delay of the ‘prayer’ was not the only factor in which Muhammed said these things. The words used in the Hadith were ONLY aimed at combatants who came 100s of miles from their homes to attack the Muslims. Historical context for Al-Ahzab, (Khandaq battle):
“At other times Muhammad sent assassins to kill his enemies in their sleep,”, here Qureshi refers to Rafi.
Abu Rafi was a warmonger, he was not an innocent man. Even by today, the democratic country Mr. Qureshi lives in, would guarantee he will get the death penalty for the crimes Abu Rafi committed.
“and even to deceive and abuse trust in order to assassinate.”, here Qureshi refers to Ka’b Ashraf.
Ka’b al-Ashraf was a man who committed a number of heinous crimes against the Muslims. He killed, and incited tribes to attack the Muslim community. There was no deception used, this is Qureshi’s own interpretation. Click on the link for more information regarding Ashraf:
“He punished some enemies by cutting off their hands and feet, branding their eyes with heated iron, and causing them to lick the dust until they died.”
The punishment meted out on the UKIL criminals were done so, as a result of them, murdering, torturing, decapitating and raping women. The gouging of eyes did Not happen. Here is a thorough examination of this incident:
So far every incident Nabeel has shown, he is fond of defending, murderers and rapists. Every instance he has shown so far, are men who committed rape and murder. Is he a “rape apologist” ?
“He led battles against unarmed cities.”, here he refers to Khaibar incident.
Khaybar was one of most armed cities in Arabia.
“He allowed even women and children to be exposed to danger during nighttime raids.”,
This has been responded to here:
“On more than one occasion Muhammad decimated tribes by killing all their men and teenage boys while distributing their women and children as slaves.”
What Qureshi leaves out, as it is the usual character of him, is that the Banu Qurayzah, broke their pact, attacked, and funded Quraysh militarily. Only Banu Qurayzah’s men, who actively were involved in the treachery were killed i.e., combatants. No teenage boys were killed, this is made up by Qureshi. Here is a thorough examination of Banu Qurayza incident:
Another thing Mr. Nabeel left out was that the Qurayzah combatants getting killed, were judged by Deuteronomy Law. This passage:
“When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee. And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. (Bible – Deuteronomy 20:10-14)
I find it amusing the double standards and hypocrisy from Mr. Qureshi, he attacks Prophet Muhammed (p) for the judgement passed on to the Banu Qurayza tribe, from his own Holy Book. If Christians like Qureshi, find this ruling from their own book abhorrent, then they should tear away such verses from the Bible. The blame should be on the Bible for making such rulings for those who commit treachery, and wage war.
“Slay the infidels wherever you find them” on pages 617-619. There it makes clear that not just the one tribe of polytheists who broke a treaty, but all polytheists would have to leave Arabia or be slaughtered.”
The only polytheists that were touched were those actively participated in harming the Muslims, 1400 years ago. Even the verse before 9:5 explains this:
“Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].” Quran 9:4
So those polytheists who remained peaceful and abided by the treaties weren’t touched. More here:
“A few pages later, this earliest biography of Muhammad’s life explains why Muslims are told to “Fight the People of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)… until they pay the ransom tax and feel subdued.”
No Mr. Qureshi, the Muslims fought the Byzantine’s as a result of them preparing to attack Madinah. This is reported in most of authentic hadith books and Maghazi literature. Not for money.
Even Ibn Ishaq, whom you love quoting tells you in the very first page that Byzantine were assembling their troops to attack Madinah.
Nabeel then ends his article by saying:
“Once again, my imams dismissed the historical records and traditions, advising me to ignore them. Since these are the very sources that tell us about Muhammad, I cannot selectively ignore the portions I find problematic.”
Nabeel, if you really were in search of truth regarding these quotes, you wouldn’t go to an Imam. An Imam knows basics of religion. These things you brought up, are dealt with scholars. I doubt you were looking for answers, personally I believe you are writing these articles bashing Islam, in order to fatten your piggy bank.
